Broiled Halibut Recipe
Halibut is one of the most famous of wild Alaskan white fish. It is delicious and healthy and a staple in our kitchen. There are many ways to prepare halibut but here is a basic broiled halibut recipe.

My husband makes a special trip to Valdez on the coast of Alaska in the summer to go halibut fishing. He also catches lingcod and rockfish, another white fish. He comes home with a cooler full of beautiful fish all ready to go in the freezer and for us to enjoy for several months.
We enjoy cooking halibut steaks in many recipes that keep us warm and full during the long winter months. Whether we grill it, bake it, put it in a chowder, or one of our favorites, mac & cheese, it’s always delicious.
The easiest way to prepare halibut fillets is to broil them. Here’s a simple broiled halibut recipe that makes a healthy and tasty supper for your family any day of the week. Whether you enjoy the halibut as is or use it to add to other easy fish dinner recipes, you’ll find broiling to be a fast way to get an amazing meal on the table.

Broiled Halibut Recipe
Here are basic instructions for broiling halibut or any other white fish:
- You do not need a broiler rack when broiling fish, only the pan. Oil just the area that the fish will cover. Lining the pan with foil (not parchment paper) makes cleaning up easier and moving the fish to a serving dish easier too.
- Generously brush the fish with melted butter, olive oil, or your favorite marinade.
- Sprinkle with salt and black pepper and your favorite herbs, if desired.
- Place fish skin side down on the broiler pan.
- Place broiler pan in the oven so that the top of the fish is about 4 inches from the heat source.
- Broil halibut for 8 to 12 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish. Brush with additional melted butter or oil halfway through cooking.
- Cook until the fish flakes easily with a fork at the thickest part.

Start with fresh or previously frozen halibut fish that is about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. If you have a much thinner fillet, broiling will probably dry it out so I recommend another cooking method such as just simply baking it at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes.
If you’re using frozen fish fillets, follow these tips for the best way to thaw them.
Here are some ideas for adding some tasty flavor to your broiled halibut:
- Lemon juice or lemon zest
- Minced garlic or garlic powder
- Dill weed
- Green onions
- Orange juice
- Favorite fresh herbs
