Are you enjoying your summer bounty of fresh wild blueberries? Or maybe you have some still frozen from the previous year. I’ll show you how to make blueberry sauce with them for a tasty addition to your favorite treat!

Alaska is known for its amazingly delicious wild blueberries. Every fall we look forward to blueberry season and spending time picking as many as we can. We enjoy some fresh and bake them into our favorite desserts.

Many of them we freeze to enjoy throughout the year during the winter months when we’re dreaming of summer days ahead. The sweet taste of blueberries brightens up the dark, cold, and snowy days.

One way that I like to use our hand-picked wild blueberries is to make blueberry syrup. It’s so simple and quick and makes a great topping for countless recipes.

It’s also a great way to use up extra fresh berries or frozen berries from the previous year to make room in the freezer for more.

You only need a couple of ingredients and a few minutes to whip up this blueberry sauce. I think your family will love it just like ours does!

Ingredients for Blueberry Sauce

You just need a few simple ingredients to make this easy blueberry sauce!

  • Blueberries- We use wild, fresh blueberries that we hand-pick here in Alaska. They are small and tart in comparison to grocery store blueberries. You can also use frozen blueberries, you will just need to allow for a few extra minutes of cooking time.
  • Honey or pure maple syrup- Honey from our bees is my favorite sweetener to use. 100% pure maple syrup will also make a delicious sauce. I like to use as little sugar as possible when baking for my family but feel free to add more if you want to sweeten up your sauce.
  • Cornstarch
  • Lemon- I like to use a little lemon juice for flavor but it’s optional so don’t worry if you’ve run out of lemons. You can also sprinkle some lemon zest in your sauce for a real burst of flavor! Give orange juice a try sometime as well.
  • Water

Feel free to try this recipe using other berries as well! Strawberry sauce is delicious and raspberries work great too for a fruit sauce. Or try a combination of berries!

Tools You Will Need

No special tools required! Mix everything together right in the saucepan for less dishes. All you will need is:

  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Medium Saucepan
  • Mixing spoon
  • Strainer

Straining the sauce is optional. Feel free to skip this step and keep the mashed berries in the sauce. You will have a higher yield as well.

Remember that berry juice will stain so use glass or metal utensils that will clean easily. I keep my favorite wooden spoon in the drawer when making this recipe!

How to Use Blueberry Sauce

Blueberry sauce makes the perfect topping for just about any treat! Try drizzling it on your favorite recipe including:

I do recommend being being very careful when serving homemade berry sauce! It will stain very easily so take care when it’s on your wooden table or cotton tablecloth.

I always use a small pitcher to help it pour cleanly and I have a plate under the pitcher to catch any drips. Otherwise, keep it on the countertop where it can easily be cleaned up if there’s a spill.
