Honey Bee Healthy Recipe

Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Measuring cup
  • Mixing spoon
  • Small dish
  • Blender
  • Quart jar

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups Water
  • 2 1/2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch Soy lecithin granules
  • 8 drops Lemongrass essential oil
  • 8 drops Spearmint essential oil
  • 8 drops Lavender essential oil (optional)

Instructions

  • Place 1 pinch of soy lecithin granules into the small dish. Cover with just a little warm water and allow to sit and start to dissolve.
  • Heat the water in the saucepan over medium heat until hot, but do not bring to a boil.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until completely dissolved.
  • Add the dish of water and soy lecithin along with the essential oils. Stir until combined.
  • Allow to sit until completely cool.
  • Pour into the blender and blend on high speed for 5 minutes.
  • Store in the fridge in an airtight jar or container. Use as directed when feeding bees and discard at the end of the season.

Notes

To use: add 1 tablespoon per gallon of 2:1 sugar syrup then feed to the bees in early spring and late fall.
Add a few teaspoons to a spray bottle filled with sugar water and spray bees when completing a hive check instead of using a smoker.
Add a drizzle when mixing up candy boards for overwintering.
Discard in the fall and make a new batch the following spring.
